Taranaki gate

Taranaki gate

A Taranaki gate is a few strands of wire held in place by battens – a simple, make-do device that can be tricky to open or close. Despite its name, there is no evidence that it was invented in the region. The Taranaki gate is fast approaching extinction – ‘gates’ nowadays are more likely to be a couple of electrified tapes.
