In July 2007 roading contractors in Takapuna, Auckland, uncovered a midden (rubbish dump) filled with shells. The find suggests there was a Māori settlement close by. Work was stopped while archaeologists and Māori inspected the area. The age of the site is not yet known. Māori had protocols for disposing of rubbish away from living areas.
