Charles Knight made the first estimate of New Zealand’s national income in 1866. Born in Sussex, Knight had accompanied George Grey to New Zealand in 1845, where he became auditor general. He had a great love of exact measurement which led him to establish the country’s first meteorological stations and to make a considerable contribution to botany.
