The staff of the Four Square Foodmarket in Normans Road, Elmwood, Christchurch, posing behind the bicycle on which they did their home deliveries, in 1963. They collected orders in the morning, and delivered the groceries in the afternoon. In the meantime staff weighed out and bagged up items such as sugar, flour and biscuits in the order wanted by customers. Some city grocers delivered until the 1970s, but by then, in most places, the car and the supermarket had put an end to deliveries – and, in many cases, to small grocery shops.
