Much of the West Coast was unsuitable for dairy farming because it became waterlogged in winter. In recent decades there has been major reconstruction of the land by ‘humping and hollowing’ it to make well-drained ridges on which cows can graze without pugging the pasture. These examples of humped and hollowed paddocks are near Waimangaroa, north of Westport. Work is in progress in the centre of the photograph.
