Kōrero: Parades and protest marches

Crossing the Harbour Bridge (2 o 2)

Crossing the Harbour Bridge

The number of protesters grew as the march moved south towards its destination in Wellington. The protest, seen here crossing the Harbour Bridge, swelled as it reached Auckland. The hīkoi was pivotal in highlighting the depth of Māori feeling about the loss of their tribal lands. In the same year, the government set up the Waitangi Tribunal to investigate breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi, including land alienation. The tribunal’s work is ongoing.
