South Westland coastline

South Westland coastline

The coastline in South Westland is gradually moving seawards, due to the growth of coastal dunes with forest-covered swamps behind them. This aerial view of the mouth of the Waiatoto River shows how the river has been turned northwards by the growth of a sandbar, caused by strong coastal currents.
