Touting for business, 1936

Taxi drivers look out for customers from a right-of-way opposite the Christchurch railway station in December 1936. This photograph appeared in the Report of the commission of inquiry into taxi and town carrier businesses, appointed by the first Labour Government in 1936. The commission found that fierce competition had driven down taxi prices and led to dishonest tactics by drivers desperate for customers.
