The number of unions increased rapidly during the 1880s, and led to industrial action in unexpected places. This report from the Taranaki Herald of 12 October 1889 describes a strike by Wellington schoolboys protesting against too much homework. The strike was inspired by news of similar action by boys in Scotland. The Wellington strike failed after the ringleader ‘turned traitor’ and handed in his homework after all.
