Reactive rock phosphate consists of very fine particles and looks much like fine beach sand. It can be applied directly to pasture as a fertiliser. There is a direct reaction with acids in the soil – phosphate is slowly released and taken up by the pasture. The rock phosphate used to make superphosphate is too hard for this reaction to release enough phosphate.
