Stone walls

Stone walls

In the Paihia district of North Auckland, volcanic stone was cleared off before the land was cultivated, and used to build stone walls. In the absence of other fencing materials stone walls provided an effective barrier for stock. However they were laborious and slow to construct. This one has had a barbed-wire fence erected beside it as an additional safeguard.
