Steam rises from the Ketetahi Springs on the northern slope of Mt Tongariro. They take their name, which means ‘one basket’, from an incident involving the Te Arawa ancestor Ngātoroirangi. Atop the cold mountain, he summoned three baskets of fire. When only one arrived, he threw it onto the side of Tongariro.
