Te Papa (known as ‘our place’) is New Zealand’s national museum. Opened in 1998, it has become a major tourist attraction for both local and international visitors. The grey wall that bisects the building on a south-west to north-east axis symbolises the region’s faultlines. Te Papa’s architecture has attracted critics. In 2007 the Dominion Post newspaper asked its readers to vote for Wellington’s worst building; Te Papa topped the poll.
