The fern Asplenium cimmeriorum was first described by scientist Peter de Lange, who found it at Mangapu Cave in the King Country in 1985. He later found the plant in other limestone formations in the district. Other researchers recorded it in limestone areas on the West Coast. It favours lowland sites with limestone rocks and high rainfall. In the North Island it grows mainly around cave entrances and limestone walls, in areas with little light. In the South Island it also grows in forest, on rotting logs, roots, and rock. This one is in the Fox River valley, near Punakaiki.
