New Zealand sent 10 contingents to the war in South Africa, a total of some 6,500 men. The contingents became progressively larger. The first three contingents, which left within the first five months of the war, were under 300 men, organised into two companies. The next four, which left between March 1900 and April 1901, were each about 500–600 strong. The last three contingents, which arrived in South Africa as the war was in its final stages, were each over 1,000 men.
