In February 1846 Thomas Brunner and his companions set off to find habitable land south of Nelson. The party was guided by a Māori, Kehu, and included two men with artistic talents. The first was Charles Heaphy, a draughtsman for the New Zealand Company, and several of his sketches from the journey survive. The second was William Fox, who prepared a number of watercolours on the journey. Click on the small images to see the paintings.
