The native green-lipped mussel has been farmed since the early 1970s, and production of the shellfish increased dramatically through the 1990s. It is the sole indigenous species farmed for profit in New Zealand. Mussels account for about 70% of the country’s earnings from aquaculture. The production figures given in this graph are for greenweight (unprocessed) tonnages. The data has been collected by members of the New Zealand Marine Farming Association.
