Alan MacDiarmid died on 7 February 2007 at the age of 79. A special memorial service was held for him in New Zealand at St Paul’s Cathedral in Wellington on 16 March 2007. Frank Nelson, the Dean of Wellington, conducted the service, which was attended by some members of MacDiarmid’s immediate family, including his wife, Gayl Gentile.
