The Cattle Trespass Amendment Ordinance came into effect on 1 October 1844, and was enacted by the Legislative Council. ‘Cattle’ included ‘horned and neat (polled) cattle’ as well as sheep, goats, pigs, horses, mules and asses. Anyone whose property was damaged by any of these animals could be compensated up to £20.
