This is a digital image of the Chatham Rise, the large underwater plateau that stretches east of the South Island to the Chatham Islands. Along 400 kilometres of the plateau’s crest, conditions are ideal for the growth of phosphate. Phosphate is precipitated from sea water over very long periods of time, forming little bumps on the sea floor.
