In the 1920s Frank S. Anthony, author of the 'Me and Gus' stories, was one of the first New Zealand writers to mine the comic value of the Kiwi male. The hapless 'me' of the stories, Mark Henricks, wades through bachelor farming life alongside his cobber Gus Tomlins. In this sketch by Nevile Lodge, which accompanied the 1951 edition of the stories, Gus has moved into Mark's digs for the winter, bringing an end to the quiet life Mark enjoys.
