This portrait of internationally famous Wagnerian bass Donald McIntyre was painted by Wellington artist Melvin Day in 1990, and is now part of the Parliamentary art collection. In 1990 McIntyre was in Wellington, performing the role of Hans Sachs in the Wagner opera Die meistersinger von Nürnberg for the New Zealand Festival of the Arts. His spectacular singing career began in the late 1950s and took him to all the world's major opera houses. He became one of the leading stars at the annual Bayreuth Festival from the 1960s. He was knighted in 1992 and in the 2000s was based in the United Kingdom.
