In February 1890 the 77-year-old ex-premier William Fox climbed Mt Taranaki in an 18½-hour marathon. The party included the guide Harry Peters, painter Edith Halcombe, and New Plymouth mayor Arthur Standish and his daughter. Before the climb, Fox recorded their camp at what is today the North Egmont Visitor Centre.
