Opening of Te Tauraka Waka a Māui marae

On 23 January 2005 a new marae was opened at Bruce Bay in South Westland. Richard Wallace, ūpoko-tuarua (deputy head) of Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio, is speaking to the large crowd who attended the ceremony.

The opening was deeply significant to all Māori on the West Coast, as there had not been a marae in the region for 140 years.
