Story: Wellington places
Three islets lie off the eastern side of Kapiti Island. Ngāti Toa chiefs were keen to live on them because they gave greater security and were close to anchorages of visiting ships. For a time the chief Te Rauparaha lived on Tāhoramaurea. When he left the island it was occupied by whalers, who built several stone houses on its north-western side. This is a surviving wall from one of the houses.
