Comfort in the cabins
On sailing ships steerage passengers had slept on tiers of bunks in a large common area, where curtains and partitions afforded little privacy. By the years before the First World War, passengers on steamers slept in cabins, some with as many as six or eight bunks, but all equipped with electric light and washing facilities.
