Kermadec volcanoes
North-east of the Bay of Plenty, lines of jagged, conical volcanoes as high as Mt Ruapehu (2,797 metres) rise up from the ocean floor. They are volcanic in origin – many have large craters, indicating that they were formed by powerful eruptions. Detailed bathymetric surveys have outlined their shape.
