Wave and waka sculpture

Sculptor Te Warihi Hetaraka shapes the prow of a waka. This major sculpture project at Hihiaua Point, at the entrance to the Whāngārei Town Basin, has been inspired by a Māori name for the area – Whāngārei Te Renga Paraoa (the gathering place of whales). In 2005 Te Warihi Hetaraka and another renowned sculptor, Chris Booth, were working on the landmark. It will include stone wave forms, a waka (canoe) landing platform, a haka performance platform, promenades, landscaping and seating.
