This is the prow of the waka (canoe) Te Āio o Nukutaimemeha, which was built in 1999, and is named in commemoration of Nukutaimemeha, the waka of the demigod Māui. In Ngāti Porou tradition, when Māui fished up the North Island, the first part to come up was Hikurangi mountain, where Nukutaimemeha became stranded. The traditional waiata 'Haere rā e hika' mentions a number of canoes, including Nukutaimemeha.
