Professor Sir Paul Callaghan is shown with a rock core analyser in Wellington in 2010. Callaghan, a physicist, was founding director of the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology. He was based at Victoria University of Wellington, specialising in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) research. The rock core analyser uses NMR to measure the fluid content inside rock samples. Callaghan, who died of cancer in 2012, was also one of New Zealand's most prominent science communicators.
