In the movie version of Te tangata whai rawa o Weneti, a Māori-language translation of Shakespeare's The merchant of Venice, Portia (played by Ngarimu Daniels) and her maidservant Nerissa (Veeshayne Armstrong) make plans to select a husband for Portia. The play was translated in 1945, first performed on stage in 1985, and released in a cinema version in 2001. Both the stage and screen versions were directed by Don Selwyn.
