Dancing in the 1860s could be a vigorous and tiring romp. This 1869 cartoon contrasts the experiences of a young lady and her partner. She is in raptures: 'Oh Maria dear, I have had such a delightful galop! And Mr Hard-up is such a capital dancer. I declare that when he was whirling me round the room I felt just like a little bird.' He, on the other hand, tells a friend, ‘Oh my poor arm, it’s nearly off.'
