On 6 April 1864, a group of soldiers from the 65th Regiment was attacked at Ahuahu by a group of Māori. The unit’s leader, Captain T. J. Lloyd, was killed. The Māori yelled a new war cry, ‘Hau! Hau!’ In the television series The New Zealand Wars, James Belich explains that the Māori were adherents of a new religion, Pai Mārire (sometimes known as Hauhau), which gave renewed energy to Māori resistance.
