Kahuwera pā, in the Bay of Islands, is shown abandoned in this sketch by Louis-Auguste de Sainson. The artist was in a party with Dumont D’Urville when he visited the pā in March 1827. Māori settlements in pre-European times were orderly, with rubbish dumps and latrines located well away from living areas.
