The lower reaches of the Hutt River pass through Lower Hutt (north of Wellington city). Although the river appears peaceful in this 2005 photograph, it often flooded in the 19th century, leading the first European settlers there to move to Wellington. Stopbanks were later built on either side of the river (marked). Because the river floods within the stopbank area, this land is reserved for recreational use.
