The percentage of the New Zealand workforce who belonged to a trade union increased suddenly after 1936, when it became compulsory for an employee to join a union where one existed in their industry. When compulsory membership was abolished in 1991, the percentage dropped just as sharply, and stabilised about 10 years later.
