Story: Coal and coal mining

Miner’s shack, Denniston

Miner’s shack, Denniston

This is a corrugated-iron dwelling at Coalbrookdale about 1917. Florence Donaldson holds a baby while her neighbour, Mrs Oldham, stands beside her. The housing in mining areas was often very poor, partly because the miners hoped to move on, and because mine owners were unwilling to invest in improvements.
