William Larnach intended his amazing Gothic castle on Otago Peninsula to be ‘a monument to my enterprise’. But in Larnach’s later life his enterprise was not especially successful. A banker, a member of Parliament and a cabinet minister, he suffered severely with the collapse of the Colonial Bank. Overcome by depression, he committed suicide in Parliament buildings.
