The crowning glory of Octavius Hadfield's Church of England mission at Ōtaki was Rangiātea Church, built in 1849 by Māori converts under the direction of Tāmihana Te Rauparaha. This interior view by Charles Decimus Barraud exaggerates the height of its supporting pillars, which were nevertheless impressively tall. Hadfield is shown in the pulpit.
