Story: Haast, Julius von

Sir Julius Haast

A head and shoulders portrait of Julius Haast in later life, heavily bearded, in suit and bow tie.

Allan Cambridge’s painting of Sir Julius von Haast, commissioned after Haast’s death by the trustees of the Canterbury Museum and based on an 1886 photograph. The painter has used some artistic licence – Haast was entirely white-haired by the 1880s, rather than the salt-and-pepper look he has been given.
