Labour MP Willow-Jean Prime introduces the third reading of the Parental Leave and Employment Protection Amendment Bill, which provided for 22 weeks of paid parental leave from 1 July 2018 and 26 weeks from 1 July 2020. It was passed unanimously. Extension to paid parental leave was a key Labour Party policy in the 2017 election campaign. The Parental Leave and Employment Protection Amendment Act built on a private member’s bill introduced by Labour MP Sue Moroney in 2015. This was passed by Parliament in 2016 but vetoed by the National-led government on cost grounds.
