University enrolments, 1900–2010

This graph shows trends in university enrolments. By 1900, when the graph begins, the first four university colleges, which later became universities – Otago, Canterbury, Auckland and Victoria – had opened. Enrolment growth was modest in the first half of the 20th century. Enrolments grew more rapidly after the Second World War, accelerated from the mid-1960s and grew even faster from the mid-1980s.
