This pīpīwharauroa (shining cuckoo) chick is in the nest of a riroriro (Chatham Island warbler). The cuckoos' habit of leaving their young to be raised by other birds was observed with disdain by Māori. They compared idle people to the koekoeā (long-tailed cuckoo) in particular.
