Seen here at low tide, the blue mussels on this wharf pile indicate the high- and low-tide marks in Wellington Harbour. The difference between high and low tides in Wellington and elsewhere along the New Zealand coast is not great by world standards (1–2 metres). Tidal ranges can be more extreme in enclosed areas such as estuaries, for example at Manukau Harbour, which can have a tidal range of about 4 metres.
