Story: Feature film

Mt Zion, 2012

Mt Zion, 2012

A popular New Zealand feature film of the early 21st century was Tearepa Kahi's Mt Zion. Set in Pukekohe, south of Auckland, in 1979, it stars singer Stan Walker (winner of the 2009 Australia idol television competition) as a young farm worker and musician who hopes to perform with reggae star Bob Marley during his 1979 tour to New Zealand. Veteran actor Temuera Morrison plays Walker's stern father. The soundtrack features a host of reggae classics, and several songs specially written for the film. Kahi (of Ngāti Pāoa and Ngāti Hine) based the film on his own upbringing in Pukekohe.
