SlutWalk

SlutWalk

The near-instant communication enabled by social networking sites has made it easier to organise public protests. The 2011 SlutWalk organisers used the likes of Facebook to rally support for marches in Auckland and Wellington. The marches were part of a worldwide protest against a Canadian policeman’s comment that women could help protect themselves against sexual predators by not dressing like ‘sluts’. Marchers argued this was blaming the victim, not the perpetrator, for sexual attacks, and that women should wear what they liked. Marchers were encouraged to dress like sluts to emphasise the point. These women are on the Auckland protest.
