Sylvia and her family at Horoera, 1939

Sylvia suggested that she and her husband Keith teach in the native school system. They are pictured here with their children in Horoera, near East Cape, where they went to teach in 1938. The isolation contributed to Sylvia suffering what was referred to at the time as a nervous breakdown.
