Diwali festival: Wellington, 2010

Since 2002 the Wellington City Council and other civic leaders have joined in celebrating the festival of Diwali, the start of the Hindu new year. Here Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand (a Catholic) opens the festival by lighting a diya (earthenware oil lamp) at the altar of the elephant-headed god Ganesha. A troupe of musicians and dancers from the Indian state of Rajasthan, and famous Indian magician Uday Jadugar, performed at the festival.
