In the 19th century and for much of the 20th century, manufacturing provided goods for the local market. Manufacturing for export became a priority in the 1980s, but the first tentative moves were made well before then. This is a 1962 trade mission to South-East Asia, led by Deputy Prime Minister Jack Marshall (ninth from left), and accompanied by Secretary of Trade and Industry Bill Sutch (sixth from right).
