Seagulls wheeling above piles of stinking rubbish is a memory many New Zealanders have of the rubbish tip. Until the 1990s people drove right up to the tip face and dumped their rubbish. A compactor with studded steel wheels then drove over it all. In the 2000s most tipping was done into a concrete bunker. The rubbish was then sorted, and transferred by truck up to the tip face.
